Scheduled Agents used in Mining Sector

The hazardous nature of most mining operations, coupled with the remoteness of many mine sites, means that site operators must exercise the highest levels of care with regard to fire protection in order to safeguard lives, mining equipment, property and the environment. The responsibility for fire safety on mine sites extends to every person on site including; fire protection contractors tasked with inspecting, testing and maintaining fire protection systems and equipment, visitors and site staff (both those directly involved with the mining operation as well as support staff).

It is important that gaseous fire suppression systems on mine sites are installed and maintained by licensed technicians to ensure full functionality in the event of a fire and minimise unnecessary discharges of scheduled extinguishing agents into the atmosphere. Scheduled extinguishing agents are ODS and SGG's that can damage the earth's ozone layer and add significantly to the greenhouse effect and global warming.

As such the Board is determined to ensure that all businesses and individuals are aware of the FPI scheme requirements and improving the knowledge of scheduled extinguishing agents among stakeholders.

The Board has developed communication materials that include a factsheet and article to raise awareness of legislative requirements when using gaseous fire suppression systems containing scheduled extinguishing agent in the mining industry.
